The Week Ahead and Beyond

This Sunday is the 14th Sunday After Pentecost. Linda's message is “Where Is My Sign?” The Hand Chimes Choir will provide the special music. 

At its last meeting, the Session approved a proposed plan for Linda to work ¾ time for a trial period of six months, starting in October. She would be out of the pulpit an average of once or twice each month, with a rotation of four people filling in. There will be a decrease in Linda’s salary, appropriate to serving ¾ time. After worship on Sunday, there will be a Question and Answer session with an opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback.

There will be a congregation meeting after church on Sunday, September 13, to vote on changes to Linda's terms of call.

Sunday School

Sunday School will start on September 20. The delay is due to Labor Day weekend and the congregational meeting. As of now, we will have one adult class, the Adult Forum. We will alternate our topical studies with Bible study. We will begin with a presentation of my experience with PCUSA General Assembly, and many of the decisions reached there. I hope you will come with questions.

New Addition

Meet the newest member of the Allen/Hull/Gracia family. Damon Rafael Garcia Hull, at 8 lb. 6 oz., arrived on August 22. Everyone is healthy and doing well. Parents are Quinn and Amanda and grandparents are Liz Allen and Bruce Hull.

A Loss

Emily Bender entered her eternal life with God on Monday night. She will be buried with Ed near Portsmouth, Ohio, later this week. There will be a memorial service at Northside in a few weeks. Please keep Ellen, Alex, Margaret, Sam, Emmy, and the family in your prayers. This is such a sad loss for all of us who knew and loved Emily.

Rev. Dr. Hugh B. Springer, 1941-2026

Hugh Brock Springer, 85, was born in Fairmont, WV and was the son of Thomas Edgar Springer and Louise Campbell Showalter, both deceased.

He was a graduate of Philips Academy, Andover, Mass. His undergraduate work was at West Virginia University. His graduate work was done at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and University of Pittsburgh. He taught philosophy at Fairmont State University and served as the Presbyterian Campus minister at Marshall University. The family traveled with Hugh to Australia where he was Associate Chaplain at Newington College in Sydney, Australia. Upon returning to the US, he became pastor of Northside Presbyterian Church He served Falling Spring Presbyterian Church in Lexington. Upon retirement, he served several churches in the Roanoke area as an interim minister. He also served on several committees of Peaks Presbytery and served as State Clerk of the Presbytery.

He had one brother, Thomas E. Springer and a son, James Brock Springer, who predeceased him. He is survived by his wife Candace McDonald Springer; son, Thomas Michael Springer and wife Carolyn Nicole Gross; daughter-in-law, Merry Jol Rech, and 4 grandchildren, Alexandra Katherine Scribner and son-in-law Connor, Julia Grace, Aidan Nicholas, Gabriella Meredith and great granddaughter, Darragh Scribner.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, October 10, at Northside.

Giving Opportunity!

Sophia Frimpong is setting up a school in Ghana. She is beginning with kindergarten and will gradually add other grades. Ordering things and having them sent directly to Ghana or buying local is the best option economically.  Desks and chairs are a priority.  If you would like to donate to Sophia’s education project you may write a check to Northside, noting that it is for the "Ghana school project."  You can also donate on line by selecting "Northside PC Ad Hoc Giving" and noting that the payment is for the "Ghana school project."

Monday Night Supper

The meal on Monday was Kroger fried chicken, broccoli Normandy, tater tots, fruit cup, and cookies. We served 85 meals. Helpers included Marge and George, Ann Marie, Susan, and Heidi and Bruce.

Volunteers to help prepare and pack meals are always welcome and needed.
