The Week Ahead and Beyond

This Sunday is the Eleventh Sunday After Pentecost. Linda's message is “Lord, If It’s You.”  We will collect the 2 Cents a Meal offering After worship, we will enjoy lemonade on the lawn.

The Session will meet after church for its regular monthly meeting.

Summer Means Vacation Bible School

Another oldie but goodie from the June 2006 Vacation Bible School at Northside.

The best-guess key is on the website.

Giving Opportunity!

Sophia Frimpong is setting up a school in Ghana. She is beginning with kindergarten and will gradually add other grades. Ordering things and having them sent directly to Ghana or buying local is the best option economically.  Desks and chairs are a priority.  If you would like to donate to Sophia’s education project you may write a check to Northside, noting that it is for the "Ghana school project."  You can also donate on line by selecting "Northside PC Ad Hoc Giving" and noting that the payment is for the "Ghana school project."

Summer 2026

Local Invasive plants of concern to your yard and trees (use INATURALIST or SEEK Phone Apps to identify)

Invasive ground cover : Garlic Mustard, Stilt grass, Wavyleaf grass

Pull in spring or late fall when you can get the roots out.

Invasive shrubsMulti flora rose, Japanese Honeysuckle, Mile a Minute, Autumn Olive, Chinese Privet.

Hand pull or cut base of stump to ground level.

Invasive vines: English Ivy (also spreads as a ground cover), Oriental Bittersweet vine.

Cut a gap in the vines around the base of the tree from low to waist height with loppers/pruning saw.   May need a pry bar to separate from the tree to access with loppers/saw.

Personal Protection equipment - safety glasses, dust mask, gloves, boots, sturdy pants. Tuck pants in socks and spray socks with tick spray. Shower and check for ticks afterwards.

Local Resources to assist: Dylan Vines- dvines@blacksburg.gov.  Larger infestations of invasives may require targeted herbicide applications, bush hogging, or speciality firms.

Virginia Tech is developing an Invasive Plants research group and has added faculty and is becoming a national leader in this area.

Monday Night Supper

The meal last week was Arby's roast beef sliders (2), cucumber salad, fruit, and banana pudding. We served 100 meals. The salad and pudding were donated by the Hethwood Market. Helpers included Alex, Susan, Linda, Bill, Pam, and Ann Marie.

The meal on Monday included 2 hot dogs, baked beans, chips, fruit, and cookies. We served 74 meals (including seven that were dropped off at the community refrigerator at Cooper House). Helpers included Marge and George, Linda, Susan, and Heidi and Bruce.

Volunteers to help prepare and pack meals are always welcome and needed.
