The Week Ahead
This Sunday is the Transfiguration of the Lord. Linda's message is “Morphing.” The choir will perform “Be Still and Know.” We will also collect additional donations for the Souper Bowl, which supports hunger programs.
This week's Sunday School will be a Zoom presentation by Janet and Len Shabman (former Northside members), who will talk about ministry and missions in 2026 at New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, located in downtown Washington, D.C. They will describe the congregation–size, budget, programs–and give a sense of the joys and challenges of being an urban church, especially right now from a position three blocks from the Trump White House. If time permits, they will tell stories about: • NYAPC history from 1937 to 2020. • How and why did “Under God” get inserted into the Pledge of Allegiance? • Why was Martin Luther King's last sermon not delivered at NYAPC?
They will return on March 22 and 29. They will tell these and other NYAPC stories: • What was Abraham Lincoln’s faith journey at NYAPC and how did it affect his path to the emancipation proclamation? • The Scopes “Monkey Trial” at 100: What is NYAPC’s and the Presbyterian Church’s connection to the trial and what has been the legacy for the nation?
The Session will have its monthly meeting following Sunday School. |

Souper Bowl This Sunday is the second collection of food for the Souper Bowl of Caring to benefit the Interfaith Food Pantry. The weather put us behind schedule, so we are collecting donations for two Sundays to fight hunger. Suggested items are hearty/chunky soups, canned fruit, instant oatmeal, chili, toothpaste, and soap. Cash and Kroger gift cards are also acceptable. There are collection boxes in the narthex. |

Lenten Suppers and Worship Services The Blacksburg Ministerial Association is once again sponsoring the Lenten suppers and worship services. The program will be each Wednesday starting on February 25 and ending on March 25. Northside will host the meal on March 11. The schedule of locations, preachers, and messages is below:
February 25th - Brad Dulaney, "Fasting" at Unitarian Universalist Congregation March 4th - Linda Dickerson, "Ashes Lament" at Blacksburg Presbyterian Church March 11th - Sarah Wiles, "Sabbath" at Northside March 18th - TBD at Blacksburg United Methodist Church March 25th - TBD at St. Mary’s Catholic Church
Volunteers Needed for March 11
Northside’s turn to host the service and provide the meal is on Wednesday, March 11. We will be offering a Potato Bar, as we did last year and expect to serve 75-80 people, based on attendance each week last year. The potatos will be baked at the church in the afternoon while we prepare all the toppings.
Here is what is needed from volunteers: • About 14 dozen cookies, cupcakes, brownies, or any small dessert that can be easily picked up • Preparing the toppings for serving for 4 lines • Setting up the sanctuary for the meal, then a quick reset for the worship service • Cleanup afterwards. • Other needs and duties as needed
Contact Sue Bently by email (sueinpilot@gmail.com) or see her at church to let her know what tasks you are willing to do. We are a small congregation and we need everyone’s help!

Monday Night Supper
This week's meal was Mexican lasagna, salad, fruit, and cookies. We served 40 meals, including several that went home with our volunteers. The extra lasagna and salads were delivered to the Community Refrigerator at the Cooper House, which is stocked with food for anyone who needs meal assistance.
We were blessed this week to have extra food donated by the Hethwood Market. Many thanks to them!
Thanks to our volunteers this week: Barbara, George and Marge, Ann Marie and Maria, Susan, and Heidi and Bruce. Thanks to Steve for working to get the trash and recycling bins through the snow to the curb.
Volunteers to help prepare and pack meals are always welcome and needed. |
